A few months ago I wrote about the luxury catamaran Gazelle heading to the South Pacific and the beauty of Bora Bora's fabled lagoon. Well, Gazelle has arrived and they have been in Tahiti for a month now. The Crew, Jon and Nicki (with 9 years of charter experience) have been busy checking out the area, finding the best anchorages and snorkel spots. The Abacos are part of the Bahamian island chain. They are located approximately 175 miles east of Palm Beach, Florida. The Abacos themselves are a chain of around 120 islands. Beginnings of a Charter Chef

Have you ever wondered where these yacht chefs come from? I mean did they grow up saying "when I grow up, I want to cook on yacht" - probably not. Some of them come from a sailing background and found cooking as a means to getting on a boat. For others it was the reverse. For some it is a reinvention of their life.

For one such charter chef, Ali Zutchi of NAUTICAT OF FOWEY, it was a combination of the above ingredients that brought her to where she is today...sailing the Caribbean with her Captain at her side.

Ali grew up sailing with her family on various lakes and rivers in England. While in Univeristy she took RYA sailing courses that found her in the frigid waters of the English Channel. After earning her Engineering degree and an MBA and 15 years in the Corporate world, she decided she needed to make a change. Her true passions were sailing and cooking. So off she went to the prestigious Leiths cookery school in London to complete a Diploma in Food and Wine. With certificate in hand, she returned home to Fowey and worked for a luxury hotel and learned a great deal about the restaurant business from the kitchen and business side. In 2003 she launched her own catering business cooking for Holiday homes and boats in Fowey gaining a name for herself. Later that year the run down "Toll Bar" came up for sale. She decided to take the plunge and purchased the bar even though it needed a complete refurbishment. With just 7 weeks from the completion of the sale to Easter - beginning of the "high” season - a lot of time and effort was put in. Following the process was a UK TV crew filming for a series "Life Begins Again". Easter came and the opening was a success at Zutshis at the Toll Bar as everyone wanted to check out the new place on the waterfront.

The food went from strength to strength as Ali's confidence increased. In the 2008 year the restaurant was awarded the Prestigious Hardens Guide Remy Marten Award - an award based on the ratings and recommendations given by real customers.

After garnering a reputation for excellent outside events. Alison Zutschi has taken on the popular Toll Bar, which enjoys commanding views of the water (and the pleasure craft). During the day, fresh home-made cakes and sweets and well made lattes feature alongside great sandwiches, salads and specials of the day. For the evenings, there is a cosy lounge area and the menu features an eclectic mix of food. Signature dishes include Goats feta salad with roasted peppers and balsamic dressing, Salt and Pepper calamari with sweet chilli, moules mariniéres with bread for dipping, salmon and tiger prawns in a coriander sauce with saffron rice, and Carbonnade of Beef with crushed garlic root vegetables and creamy leeks. All home-made and all prepared with the care of someone who loves to cook.

The long hours of the restaurant trade were starting to take their toll. With the reputation of the restaurant sky rocketing so were Ali's hours. Before she took over the restaurant, Ali could be found at the local yacht club sailing and competeing in club races. Her beau, Bill, was also an avid sailor and they had ideas of sailing the oceans together. With her restaurant was at the top and she decided to sell before the economic hardships that were being forcasted hit. With the restaurant sold Ali and her beau, Bill, came full circle. They completed their sailing qualifications together, bought Nauticat of Fowey and set off to follow her true passion once more...sailing and creating gourmet food for guests in the Caribbean aboard their 47ft Leopard catamaran.

The Lure of Anegada

It seems that sailors are drawn to Anegada whenever they are in BVI waters. This isolated island, about 30 miles east of Tortola has a population of less than 300 people. In fact the 4 footed species out number the humans 6 to 1. Many a time, while we were enjoying the crystal waters at Pomato Point, has one of the islands wild donkeys rummaged our tote bags looking for something to sink his teeth into.

What makes this little slice of the Caribbean popular can only be its no frills uncommercialised atmosphere. Just sailing to the island is an amazing adventure in its own right. Unlike the rest of the volcanic formed Virgin Islands, Anegada is a coral atoll barely 30ft at its highest point. (Anegada was aptly named Drowned island by the Spanish). When heading to her by sea Anegada does not come into view until you are nearly upon her. Thus eliciting comments from the back seat drivers searching the horizon - are you sure you are heading in the right direction? The first things you do see on your approach are the whistling pines in the distance. To keep ourselves entertained, on the way to Anegada, was to see who could spot them first.

Anegada also boasts the largest barrier coral reef in the Caribbean, Horseshoe Reef. This reef has claimed many shipwrecks starting back in the 1800's when the pirates and settlers of Anegada used lights to lure the ships onto the reef so that they could be pillaged and plundered. It is said that there is still gold and treasure to be found in the waters. The waters around Anegada are also known for its shark nursery. Some common sharks that you may see are Nurse sharks, Lemon sharks and Black tips. I have seen sharks of all kinds in this area but my favorite are the little Reef shark pups. They do not bite but as you stand in the shallows they love to swim around you.

Besides walking miles of white sand beaches without another soul in sight, there is bone fishing with one of the local guides or take a taxi (ask to see the Flamingos along the way) to snorkel at Loblolly Beach. A great sight for visitors is the great conch shell mounds. These mounds represent thousands of empty conch shells that the local fishermen have caught over the years.

To me, Anegada represents a place to go when I just want get away from it all. This island of 15 square miles is reminiscent of what the Caribbean would have looked like before the large hotels, cruise ships and other commercial enterprises moved in.

There are many great places to eat and the staff are friendly and locals are always willing to strike up a conversation. Lastly, Anegada is known for it lobster and a trip would not be complete without savoring this delight.

Wish upon a Shooting Star

If you are looking for a bit of historical Greece and want to stay away from the busier areas like Santorini, Mykonos and Crete, than a visit to the eastern Aegean is a perfect destination. The islands here are less popular than the Cyclades but offer up a more authentic Greece to visitors.

To visit these islands properly you will need a professional Greek guide. The islands below are anywhere from 7 to 20 nautical miles apart with the average sailing distance 12 nautical miles. Pythagorio village owes its name to the famous scientist Pythagoras and is located on the south-eastern coast of the island. One of the most popular islands in the eastern Aegean, this village brings in many tourists and you will find a blend of old and new houses mixed with cafes along this old fishing port.

Agahtonisi- With less than 150 residents, Agathonisi is known as the place to come to relax. The water is crystal clear, great for swimming or snorkeling.

Patmos- Known as the holy land of Greece, offers a truly sacred travel experience. It was on this island that St John wrote Revelation the Apocalypse, the last book of the New Testament. Today it is not just a place of sun and sand worshippers but a holy land for both Orthodox and western Christians.

Lipsoi - Visitors to this island favor its clean beaches, fish taverns and clear waters. The people here live off of fishing and agriculture.

Leros - Leros, after Crete, is the richest area of Greece in per capita income. The reason is that Leros island does not rely solely on tourism as many other Greek islands. The tourists that do come here do so for rest and relaxation. You will not find the clubs and discos that Santorini or Mykonos has. Leros has excellent road networks and is one of the few Greek islands which is alive during winter months because the island has many public services that employs a large Greek workforce.

Kalimnos - is known for its world's top sponge divers and even today you can still see them at work. This island is in it's early stages of developing as a tourist destination. This lends to the oldy worldly feel and the natives are very friendly and hospitable.

Pserimos - The crew of the Shooting Star claim this as having the best sandy beach ever! About the only thing to do here is swim and relax! This island is very small with a declining population of about 20 inhabitants. It has a total lack of commercialism, no cars and only one hotel. This is truly an island to get away from it all.

Kos - The Marina of Kos Island has been opened for about 10 years now and offers full service amenities for all sailors. Kos is the birthplace of the father of medicine, Hippocrates, who was born on the island. The island is known for its lush vegetation and its temperate climate.

The history of Greece is unrivaled and the freedom to sail from port to port will give you an amazing holiday that will fulfill you every wish.

A taste of the BVI - a benefit of half-board charters

A new phenomenon in the crewed yacht charter industry is the addition of a half board-charter option. One reason this charter style is becoming popular is the rates. On the average you can save as much as $500-$1000 per person. These charters have all the same amenities that you would receive on an inclusive yacht however, the meal plan is a bit different. A sample of what you can get with a half-board rate is: all breakfasts, 3 lunches, 3 dinners, soft drinks, ships bar and house wines. The number of meals can vary from yacht to yacht and may be customized to your needs.
Unlike the captain-only option where guests have use of the ships galley, half-board clients are expected to eat their meals off the boat and at their own expense.
Half-board option surely would not work in all parts of the world but here in the British Virgin Islands we have an abundance of beach side restaurants on the outer islands. This is a great way to get off the boat and mingle with other charterers, locals and expats.

Warning though...your bar bill can heavily outweigh your food bill.

Every Friday and Saturday Foxys' fires up the Grillzebo to prepare a Caribbean BBQ with fresh salads, fruits, vegetables, BBQ Chicken, Ribs and Mahi-Mahi.

In early May Anahita will set her sails for her 1st leg to Gibraltar. This will be the 3rd Summer that the crew, Bijan and Roseanne, have offered this trip to 2 lucky guests. The 1st leg will take approximately 30 days including a 3 day layover in the Azores. Departure can be from St. Thomas, St. Martin, or Antigua with final destination being Gibraltar. Explore the largest barrier reef of the western hemisphere

One of my favorite boat trips that I took was sailing along the barrier reef from Placencia to Ambergris Caye. Living and working in the Virgin Islands I am no stranger to the underwater splendor. Belize is blessed with an amazing variety of reefs including the longest barrier reef in the Western hemisphere. The reef not only provides a magnificent aquarium for every snorkeler and diver but protection from the large ocean swells. This makes a very comfortable experience for even the first time sailor.

From the first time I jumped in the water I was amazed at how pristine the reefs were and the amount of fish there were. As we sailed up the barrier reef we stopped at almost every little atoll or island we came across and plunged into the water. One thing that we noticed immediately was the size of the fish. There were the same varieties as we have here in the BVI just bigger. Obviously a product of a healthy eco-system.

For those of you who have sailed the Virgin Islands or the Bahamas, you will find Belize a truly unique experience. You will will not find busy anchorages but instead, you will find unspoiled beaches free from cruise ship passengers with a stunning backdrop of the sea surrounding them.

Monohull or catamaran - what to choose

You want to go on a sailing holiday but what type of sailboat do you choose? Personal preference, experience and type of group can play a big part in this decision. Families with kids or less agile adults would carefully want to look at a yachts individual layout. Catamarans are very stable which many people find more comfortable than traditional sailing yachts. For first time charterers or those who are prone to sea sickness, multi hulls would offer a great experience for you to get your feet wet. A large platform between the hulls means more space for your group to spread out. In tropical climates this is a huge bonus as most people prefer to dine, read or just lounge outside under the shade of the bimini. Alternatively, the bow hosts a prime spot for sunbathing on the trampoline, the space between the 2 hulls. The shallow draft of a catamaran allows you or your captain to anchor close to a beach or inside shallow bays where most other yachts can not reach.

In the past few years, catamarans have been the fastest growing division in the sailboat industry. For owners, the rising market of this popular style yacht has given catamarans a higher resale value over mono-hulls, many retaining the original purchase value.

Catamarans are not for everyone though. True and hearty sailors would turn their nose at a multi-hull. Traditional sailing yachts or mono-hulls can be exciting and exhilarating to sail. If you are wanting the experience of sailing and the feeling of wind in your face, nothing beats a mono-hull. For me the best part of sailing is sitting along the rail with my feet dangling just above the waves.

Many people find that traditional sailing yachts are more romantic and full of history. Trade, transportation and warfare were at one time completely reliant on these vessels. And of course the Atlantic and Caribbean waters are famous for its Pirates that plundered up and down their coastlines. Brigatines, Sloops and Schooners were favored by pirates for their speed and shallow draft.
With mono-hulls you also have more alternatives to choose from. While catamarans may vary in size and amenities they all have have a pretty familiar shape about them. With mono-hulls there are many looks that you can go for...sleek and high tech to classic wooden ketches.

With a mono-hull you may have to make some sacrifices on the sleeping accommodations. On catamarans it is fairly easy to find one that has equal accommodations which works well for couples. On most mono-hulls you will find that the cabins will be typically unequal – one master/owner cabin and the rest could be singles or bunk beds – perfect for families. Another plus side is that charter rates generally lower for mono-hulls and dockage too!

Sail the Greek Isles

With so many Greek Islands, each with their own unique look and style, it is hard to decide which one to visit. A great way to see and experience a group or cluster of islands is to charter your own yacht and sail the Greek Isles.

Mykonos Island

The best time to visit Greece is May/June and September/October. The weather is warm and the islands are not too crowded. July and August is when the influx of Europeans arrive for their Summer Holidays. If nightlife and nightclubs are what you are craving than this may be the time that you would want to visit. Personally I would be looking for the old world charm and good food that Greece has to offer. Greek salad, fresh fish of any kind, kalamari or fried squid and gyros (pronounced gee-ros) are staples on any Greek menu.

St Barths Bucket Regatta 2011

The St Barths Bucket, (pursuit race around St Barths), is a serious race for the crew and yacht owners alike given that the entry fee tops 7500€ (500€ of the entry fee will be donated to charity) but the over ending theme to the event is to have fun and enjoy the party.

The race is an invitational event open to yachts over 100ft. With over 30 entries this year the competition is heavy. Some of the yachts you might see are the impressive Perini Navis including the 288ft Maltese Falcon, Rosehearty or 148ft Helios II. Marie, a 177ft ketch from Vitters Shipyard, is a stunning compromise of race machine and luxury yacht. One to watch for at the line is Ranger, a 137’ J boat, a replica of the original 1937 built Ranger but with modern technology, is as beautiful to look at as she is to sail…winner of the 2010 St Barths Bucket.

If one is not lucky enough to be offered a position or “ride” on one of these magnificent boats, why not charter your own boat and join in with the other spectators. St Barths boasts some beautiful beaches (and fabulous food) as does St Martin and nearby Anguilla. Your captain would be able to provide an itinerary that could incorporate some race venues as well as plenty of time to spend on Nikki beach – think South Beach meets St Tropez- in the trendy St Jean area of St Barths.
